Bossa Nova Legends

Leny Andrade & Pery Ribeiro

Following last year's highly successful tour by the Bossa Nova Legends, featuring the outstanding Brazilian vocal duo, Alaide Costa and Johnny Alf, the group's joint leaders, guitarist Paulo Morello and saxophonist Kim Barth, are this year presenting another dream duo from Brazil - Leny Andrade and Pery Ribeiro, who have been working together since the 1960s.

Leny AndradeLeny Andrade

After studying at the Brazilian Conservatory of Music, Leny Andrade performed with Sergio Mendes and the Dick Farney Orchestra in Rio´s leading bossa nova nightclubs. It was in 1965 that she really won widespread public recognition with the show "Gemini Cinco", performing with Pery Ribeiro and Bossa Três. The live album of that show was a major success and kept them touring North- and South America for several years.

In the 1970s and 80s she made various albums which mixed samba and bossa nova with a jazz flavour, a style that she had mastered so superbly. In 1993, Leny moved to New York and, in that year, appeared in more than 40 international jazz festivals.

Widely regarded as the world's leading bossa nova singer, she has worked with Charlie Byrd, Herbie Mann, Toots Thielemans and Paquito D'Rivera, who dedicated his composition "Song For Leny" to her. The New York Times recently described her as "the Sarah Vaughan of Brazil."

Johnny AlfPery Ribeiro

Pery Ribeiro, a pioneer in developing the bossa nova sound, began his career in Rio at the beginning of the 1960s, working with such bossa nova icons as Joao Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Many of the most popular Brazilian songs had Pery as their first interpreter. Songs such as: "Girl from Ipanema", "Summer Samba" and "O Barquinho", just to name a few. As a composer, Pery had a major hit in 1966, "Bossa na Praia", released internationally and recorded by many performers, including Astrud Gilberto. Some years later, Ribeiro joined the Sergio Mendes Bossa Rio Band in the USA, where he still lives, having settled in Miami. One of the most eminent of the bossa nova exponents, Pery Ribeiro's remarkable contribution to the Brazilian music is documented on more than 50 albums for Capitol, EMI and Sony.

Morello & Barth lead a superb band that celebrates Leny Andrade's and Pery Ribeiro's incredible careers, melting music history with the hippest contemporary sounds from Brazil. This will be Andrade's and Ribeiro's first visit to Europe as a duo after 40 years of collaboration.
